Hill Country, Sri Lanka
Overview
The gateway to the breath-taking landscapes of the tea-growing hills of Sri Lanka is Kandy, home to the current Temple of the Tooth and the famous botanical gardens . Driving on from Kandy takes you through the rolling verdant tea plantations to the highlands on a journey through Sri Lanka that is historic as well as dramatic; Nuwara Eliya, nestled at the foot of a mountain, was made into a summer retreat by the British in the early 1800s and much of its colonial character still remains and nearby are the quaint hill country towns and villages of Dickoya, Bandarawela, Haputale and Ella where life is peaceful and unhurried. Those who have travelled this uphill journey by train will confirm that it is one of the most enchanting train journeys in the world.
